Testing the latest AI-powered hearing aids

Te Awamutu client Willie Oates talks about his experience trying the latest Phonak Infinio Sphere AI hearing aids.

Willie had been wearing hearing aids for a number of years but was only wearing them part time and found they had limited benefit for some situations. Willie and his wife like to attend the local club regularly to catch up with friends. With his previous hearing aids he couldn't really follow group conversation because of the level of background noise.

After a discussion of the features and benefits of the available options, Willie decided to trial the latest technology. He became one of the first people in New Zealand to be fitted with the new Phonak Infinio Sphere hearing aids, containing the only fully artificial intelligence chip which uses AI to recognise, track and reduce noise. Here’s what he had to say at his follow-up appointment:

"It’s been pretty awesome. They are obviously going very well.

I was at the workingmen’s club and I thought for a while that everyone in the room had gone quiet. I often struggle to hear from across the table in our group of 3, and there’s usually another table close to us yapping away.

I could hear my table very clear. I thought they had gone quiet, but I’ve been there at least 4 times and the same group has been there as well. The voices are clear and the sound is very clean.

The phone connection has been marvelous as well, my phone is in the bedroom and I’m in the lounge and I can just push a button on my hearing aid and the calls come through clearly. I don’t have to be near my phone. There’s walls in between and it’s a fair distance away.

I’m wearing my hearing aids all the time now, the sound is totally different to my old pair, it’s so pleasant to listen to everything, the sound quality is great, it’s comfortable on my ears, and the charger gives me 5 extra charges without needing to plug in the wall.

I’m very happy. It’s made a huge difference!"
