Hearing aids
We’ll explain everything about hearing aid options, brands and styles.
Taking the first step
Taking the step towards purchasing hearing aids can be daunting for first time wearers. We understand that it’s hard to make sense of all the options, offers and providers available.
When making such an important healthcare decision, you need a provider you can trust. As a small kiwi business, Wolfe Hearing is not owned by a hearing aid company or global giant. We invest in the best Audiology professionals and select the top performing hearing aids from a wide range of brands.
Hearing aid advice and fittings
At Wolfe Hearing, we know that your Audiologist is just as important as the hearing device in ensuring you achieve the best hearing possible. We give you independent, expert advice on the best products for you.
Let us help you understand all of your options, and choose from a wide range of hearing devices to meet every budget and lifestyle. There is some government funding for hearing aids for all kiwis and we can apply for this for you.
Hearing aid adjustments
Your hearing aids will need to be adjusted from time to time to keep up with changes in your hearing and lifestyle. This ensures they are helping you where it counts most.
We recommend at least an annual review of your hearing and hearing aids. We are happy to fine tune and adjust hearing aids fitted by other New Zealand Audiologists.
Hearing aid servicing and repair
We can clean, service and replace parts on site for many current makes and models of hearing aids. We can also arrange more significant repairs with the manufacturer if needed.
Bring your hearing aids to us, no matter where or when they were purchased and we can ensure they are operating correctly for you. No appointment required.
Hearing aid styles
Receiver in canal (RIC)
Receiver-in-canal (RIC) (sometimes called receiver-in-the-ear (RITE) hearing aids feature a small, discreet design where the receiver (speaker) is placed inside the ear canal. The electronic parts are connected to a very thin wire which makes these hearing aids difficult to detect.
The lightweight, open fit is usually rated the most comfortable by wearers. This style is suited to a wide range of hearing profiles and can accommodate all the latest features.
Behind the ear (BTE)
Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids sit comfortably behind the ear with a tube that delivers sound to the ear canal via a custom earpiece.
These devices are often a little larger as a result of their powerful speakers making them suitable for more severe hearing losses. They are also easier to manage for those with dexterity problems and they are arguably the most robust and reliable style given none of the electronic electronic components are in the ear-canal.
In the ear (ITE)
In-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids are custom-molded to fit the individuals actual ear from an impression made at the clinic.
There are different sizes and options available allowing a balance between discretion and functionality. Some people find this style easier to manage.
This style is not recommended for some hearing losses or for people with ear canal conditions.
Invisible in canal (IIC)
Invisible-in-canal (IIC) and Completely-in-canal (CIC) and hearing aids are the smallest and most discreet options, fitting entirely inside the ear canal.
These devices may not be suitable for everyone due to space restrictions and conditions in the ear canal.
Certain modern features may be sacrificed in order to get the small size, but these can be very convenient for those wanting to avoid parts visible outside the ear or those wearing earmuffs or headsets at work.
